If you are new to the Boss thing or just beginning to turn the corner to becoming a Best Boss, then you will need to learn how to share authority to those on your team. Yes, they will do a worse job than you and yes they will make mistakes. But a Best Boss knows that they can’t do it alone and everyone has to start somewhere.
Show Notes:
- You want your team to step up and take more responsibility, but they won’t and you’re not sure what to do next?
- If you want to go fast, go along. If you want to go far, go together. – African Proverb
- To create an engage team, you need more than robots waiting on your every command. You’ll need an engaged team with the authority to make decisions to get things done without waiting on you.
- This outcome doesn’t come easily and requires you to prepare yourself in several ways:
- Understand they won’t be able to do everything as well as you do AND they will make mistakes.
- Requires patience and time
- Will take training to undo damage you may have unknowingly done by micromanaging them
- Once you are prepared to slow down to go further, here are the 3 steps in granting authority:
-
- Permission
- Boundaries
- Reporting
- Take time to set them up for success by investing in training and contact points to check in along the way.
- Set the goal for you to be able to release things, NOT for them to be as good as you.
- Important reminder: ASK them before giving them additional responsibilities.
- EXAMPLE
- 1) ask permission
- 2) highlight strength
- 3)define basics of their responsibility

Best Step:
Today’s Best Step: Focus on a small but important responsibility for your best team member and practice going through these steps. Select a task they are likely to be successful.
OK to recognize that it can be difficult to give up some tasks.
Remember: Delegating is the only way to get more done than just what you yourself can do.
