To maximize your learning experience, as you wait for the DISC Workbook to arrive, follow these directions:
STEP 1:
Thoroughly read the ‘General Characteristics‘ section with a highlighter and a pen.
Highlight every word, phrase, sentence and section that resonates with you. If you feel it describes you then highlight it. (Many people highlight the entire section!)
Underline with the pen any word, phrase, sentence or section that does NOT resonate with you. If you aren’t sure, or know it isn’t describing you, underline it. BUT, then you need to go to someone who really knows you and ask them if they have ever noticed the underlined behavior. Much of the time, they say yes, and you just learned a lot more about yourself!
If they say they haven’t ever seen those behaviors, then feel free to cross out those sections or even white them out. Even this powerful assessment is 100% accurate.
STEP 2:
Review the ‘Ways to Communicate’ grouping. Check the box or highlight the top 3 ways that you do prefer people use when communicating with you.
Turn the page and review the ‘Ways NOT to Communicate’ grouping. Check the box or highlight the top 3 ways that you do not prefer people use when communicating with you.
This is helpful to know why you connect so easily with some people but not with others. Often times it is because of the communication style they use with you.
Then read through the sections Communication Tips, Value to the Organization and Ideal Environment each of which provide a wealth of helpful information.
STEP 3:
Carefully read through the three sections, Self-Perception, Others’ Perception – Moderate, and Others’ Perception Extreme.
It is easy to agree with the first section, where you feel great because you see these as great descriptors of you.
On a bad day, you might allow others to see some of the descriptors in the second section. These are the descriptors others might use when they experience you under moderate levels of pressure or stress.
The third section is the hardest to reconcile with. This is what you see of others on a bad day, but rarely of yourself. But, if you were to ask others that really know you about those descriptions when you are having a bad day, if they are being honest, they will list everything on that list.
The goal here is to recognize what happens when we are at our worst and how others experience us. Those may never be our intentions, but people don’t experience our intentions, they experience us through our behaviors.
STEP 4:
Carefully read through both sections, Natural and Adapted Style and Adapted Style.
Essentially, your Natural Style is what people get to see when you are comfortable and at ease and can just be yourself.
The Adapted Style is what people experience when you are consciously or unconsciously changing your behavior to better fit in. These are the behaviors others experience when you are changing things to try to thrive or just survive. See page 77 in the workbook.
Review the sections Keys to Motivating and Keys to Managing. These provide great insight into what gets you going and are extremely helpful when you find a task you just don’t want to do. If you can connect a few of these Keys with it, you can find new energy to get it done.
Imagine being a manager and having these lists of Keys for your staff. You can customize how you connect with each staff to enable them in the right ways to accomplish great things!
Select the top item from the Areas for Improvement section that you would like to work on. You can also complete the Action Plan while your workbook makes its way to you.
Finally, the graphs at the end provide a visual for your DISC style. The round wheel is most helpful when you are graphing your entire team together (workbook page 85) and the vertical graphs show where you are on each of the four scales. Using the Natural Graph on the right, identify the scale with the highest number. This is your primary DISC style. The second highest is your secondary style.
